Misa's Artist Statement
It is a deep, abstract, layered process. I commit to carving out works of great integrity and honesty thereby expanding consciousness. The purpose of the process is to richly touch the souls and spirits of the audience as active participants in the creative performance process.
My process is marked by an ever evolving mystical philosophical base that leads to making decisions that will take me and my dancers down the path of most growth. Dance is my spiritual practice and has a strong value base. Nature, and its fundamental laws, has always and continues to be a guiding force in my life. I attempt to live my life in such a way that it harmonizes with these laws. My work, consequentially, reflects this.
I work with an intention to go someplace new and courageously let go in order to allow what wants to flow through me to flow. The ego, for all intents and purposes, sits in the back seat and something greater than myself imbues the process.
It can be difficult to step outside of oneself and be truly objective about the work, about the process, and I have found it incredibly useful to ask others how they experience the work.
Following is a bit of objectivity derived from others words.
She aims to expand the human spirit by investigating the limits of what the human body can experience. The work is ground breaking, hyper-physical, emotional, and pierces the soul of the performer, the viewer, and the community. The process is courageous and bold and marked by integrity. The result is creating work that is fresh, wild, authentic, and epic, the effect is riveting, engulfing, majestic, and profound. I felt as if I was drawn into the work, I felt like I was being swallowed whole.
I think this is more interesting than what I would write about myself.
