When our country first went to war in Iraq my soul and spirit raged and I felt a pain so deep I was compelled to respond as
an artist. Rather than focus on the horror of it all I chose to embrace sending a message out into the world that there are
things we as individuals can do that will contribute to the process of peace. Using the brick as a metaphor
for building foundations I bought 500 bricks and committed to painting the bunch with images of love and value words.
Heather Carney was instrumental in getting the load painted. On a Saturday we loaded a truck full of the painted bricks
and went out into the community to plant the bricks and perform within the installation. The response was tremendous.

What was most interesting was setting up our installation next to a group of people supporting Bush. The were furious
when they saw us and the bricks accusing us of being on drugs, threatening to call the cops, and being general arses.
I couldn't figure out why words such as love, peace, empathy, and compassion should be so disturbing to them. After the
performances they were extremely apologetic. A group of developmentally disabled kids joined in in an improvisation.
How can someone not respond to a little bit of magic? A little bit of peacemaking in our own backyard. Following are
images from the day. I love that people wanted to take bricks home! I love to think that these images and words are
planted in local gardens around town. I believe that if humanity committed to building a foundation for the global
family based upon common values - and used these values to create a container for dialog - a difference could be
made in the world.
